Vital Rx Pharmacy may prepare compounded veterinary medications, through the FurMed platform, where permitted by applicable law, professional standards and the pharmacy's policies.
What compounding is
Compounding is the preparation of a medication by a pharmacist for an individual patient, in accordance with a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
Prescription required; individual animals
We prepare compounded medications only on the basis of a valid prescription (or other lawful authorization) from a licensed veterinarian that names the individual animal. Each preparation is for the animal named on the prescription and is not intended for any other animal. We do not prepare compounded medications for general stock or office use unless permitted by applicable requirements.
A compounded preparation may be considered where a veterinarian determines that it is clinically appropriate, for example where a suitable commercially available product or dosage form is not available. The decision to use a compounded preparation rests with the veterinarian.
Pharmacist assessment
Before preparing a compounded medication, the pharmacist may assess: the prescription; the animal and intended use; formulation requirements; available ingredients; stability and storage considerations; dosage form and route of administration; potential safety concerns; and whether the preparation can appropriately be compounded. We may contact the veterinarian to confirm formulation, strength, form and directions, and we may decline to compound a preparation that cannot be prepared safely, appropriately or lawfully.
Compounded medications are not equivalent to approved commercial products
Unless expressly stated otherwise, a compounded medication is not a Health Canada-authorized commercial drug product, even where its ingredients are individually authorized.
Standards
Compounding is carried out in accordance with applicable provincial and professional standards, including those of the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
No comparative claims
We make no comparative or outcome claims about compounded medications.
Labelling, beyond-use date and storage
Compounded medications are labelled with directions, identification and storage information appropriate to the medication and applicable requirements. The pharmacy assigns a beyond-use date based on applicable professional and formulation considerations. Follow all storage and handling instructions supplied. Some preparations may take longer to prepare and need special storage or shipping.
Changes to compounded preparations
Do not change the formulation, dose, route or method of administration without veterinary or pharmacist advice.
Returns
Compounded medications are prepared for one animal and generally cannot be returned for resale. If there is a problem, contact us promptly and the pharmacist will assess it. See our Returns Policy.
