Prescription Policy

FurMed is a platform powered by Vital Rx Pharmacy, 2192154 Ontario Inc., an Ontario-accredited pharmacy (OCP Accreditation Number 300344). FurMed is not a pharmacy. All dispensing, compounding, pharmacist review and counselling are provided by Vital Rx Pharmacy. In this document, "we", "us" and "our" mean Vital Rx Pharmacy, which provides its pharmacy services through the FurMed platform, and "FurMed" means the platform and the website at furmed.ca.

Vital Rx Pharmacy dispenses prescription veterinary medications, through the FurMed platform, only in accordance with applicable federal and provincial law and professional requirements.

Prescription required

Prescription medications are dispensed only on the basis of a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian, where applicable. Whether a prescription is required depends on the medication and on applicable requirements.

How prescriptions reach us

You may ask your veterinarian to:

  • Send the prescription directly to FurMed through our secure veterinarian submission form;
  • Give you the prescription so you can upload a clear photo, scan or PDF through our secure upload form; or
  • Transfer a prescription to Vital Rx Pharmacy through FurMed, where permitted.

We do not accept prescriptions or health information by regular email.

What a prescription should include

A prescription must contain enough information for the pharmacy to dispense safely and lawfully. For Ontario veterinary prescriptions this may include:

  • drug name, strength and quantity;
  • directions for use and number of refills;
  • the date;
  • veterinarian information (name, clinic, contact details, signature or authorization);
  • animal identification (name, species) and animal weight where required;
  • client (owner) information; and
  • applicable withdrawal or withholding information for food-producing animals.

Review and verification

Every prescription is reviewed by a pharmacist. We may contact the prescribing veterinarian to verify the prescription or clarify details. A prescription may be declined, held or returned to you for a new prescription where:

  • the prescriber cannot be verified;
  • the prescription is incomplete, unclear, expired or otherwise invalid;
  • the requested medication is unavailable or cannot lawfully be supplied;
  • additional clinical information is required;
  • the medication requires additional regulatory controls; or
  • the pharmacist determines that further assessment is required.

We will tell you when we cannot process a request.

Transfers

Prescription transfers are processed in accordance with applicable pharmacy requirements. Vital Rx Pharmacy will not knowingly dispense a prescription in a manner inconsistent with applicable transfer requirements, and transfer rules and limits (including for controlled substances) may mean we ask your veterinarian for a new prescription.

Refills

Refills are subject to the instructions and authorization on the prescription and to applicable law. A refill request is not by itself authorization to dispense, and refills are subject to pharmacist review.

Controlled and special-handling medications

Controlled substances and other specially regulated medications are subject to additional requirements, which may include additional prescription verification, identification and delivery controls, and some may not be available for online ordering. See our Shipping and Controlled Drugs Policy.

You may request counselling from a Vital Rx pharmacist about a prescription or medication.

Roles

Your veterinarian is responsible for diagnosis and for deciding what to prescribe, including prescribing within the applicable veterinarian-client-patient relationship. Vital Rx Pharmacy is responsible for pharmacy review and dispensing. Neither FurMed nor Vital Rx Pharmacy diagnoses, prescribes or replaces veterinary care.

Prescription records

Internet prescriptions are handled through the pharmacy's regular prescription-record system and prescription records are kept as required by law and professional standards. See our Privacy Policy.
